Hello, I am new to this site and came across this page trying to figure out my ancestry, I'm not sure if I am posting in the right location. I have a mystery and I need help, for two Runyans. The first mystery is my Benjamin Gatch Runyan, born 1828, who married Delilah R. Wallace in 1849, Warren County, Ohio; I had him as the son of William Riley Runyan and Emily Goodwin, however, I know longer believe this. Charles Steele Runyan's biography (son of William Riley Runyan and Emily Goodwin) states that his brother was Benjamin H. Runyan, not Benjamin G. Runyan. Benjamin G. Runyan was married in 1849; Benjamin Runyan living with WR Runyan and Emily Runyan is single and living at home, born 1832 (1850 census); Benjamin H. Runyan married Amanda Whitacre. So I think there were two Benjamins in the area at the same time, relatively close to one another, and Benjamin G. Runyan was attached to William Riley Runyan's family as the same Benjamin. I cannot find, however, Benjamin and Delilah in any 1850 census. I am trying t find who Benjamin G. Runyan's father actually is. The G is for "Gatch" so I believe he may somehow tie into the Gatch family of Clermont County, but I can't find it. I haven't found a will, but I do have his death certificate, both parents listed as unknown as he died in the Dayton State Hospital (no records available).
Second mystery (I believe I may have three, actually). I have the marriage records for Benjamin Runyan and Mary Steele. I still believe that I am connected somehow to this family, just not through William Riley and Emily Goodwin. In the marriage bond, it says: May 3 1807
This is to testify: Susannah Goodpasture as/is/of give her consent that Benjamin Runyan and her sister Mary Steel may git married and that ? his father and mother also give their bond in ? our?
William Bennet
John Runyan
Is this John Runyan his father or a brother? I have seen John Runyan listed as a father, and Joseph Runyan listed as a father with wife Elizabeth Trembley. Who is William Bennet? Is he a witness? Susannah is the one giving the consent, and says Mary Steele is her sister. So, is Mary Steele a maiden name or a married name? Is Goodpasture a married or maiden name? Are they both actually Bennets, and Mary married a Steele prior to Benjamin? Or is she actually a Steele and her sister is a Steele who married a Goodpasture? I found a Sarah Goodpasture tombstone who died in 1869 in Warren County, and found a Sally Goodpasture who married a Benjamin Stagg in Warren County (second marriage?).
regarding Mary Steele Runyan, I found her in 1850 living with a son, Charles S. Runyan, born around 1819; he is also the executor of Benjamin's will, his father, as Mary relinquished it. There is a five year old girl living with them, Marie E. Hudgel; I found an Isaac Hudgle also in 1850, with a Mary E. Hudgel. They were in Union Twp, Marie E., Mary, and Charles were in Salem twp. Are they the same person and if so, I wonder what the connetion is and why she was in two census records, and why she was with Charles and Mary Runyan. The age difference between William Riley and Charles S. Runyan lead me to believe that my Benjamin G. Runyan may be a son of a missing sibling? I've searched eveywhere, and recently drove to Lebanon, Warren County, searched their records, and there is nothing. Only the marriage record and a few census records of Benjamin and Delilah.
I touched on it already, but I had a John Runyan as the father of William Runyan, who married Catherine Custer (Benjamin Riley's parents). Others have Joseph and Elizabeth Trembley.
I cannot find records showing one or another; I have found Find A Grave, searched probate records on Family Search, used Ancestry, but it's always the same trees, with no proof offered one way or another. Any suggestions where to turn or what to look for? Thank you so much.
