Vincent Rongnion first arrived at Elizabethtown, New Jersey between 1665 and 1668. He married Ann Martha Boucher at Elizabethtown on June 28, 1668, the marriage license given by Phillip Carteret.. That marrage license is the first document to reference his name in this country. On March 20,1671-2 he purchased property from Francis Barber in Elizabethtown, the deed of sale stating "Francis Barber of Elizabethtown, planter, sells to Vincent Ronyon, 40 rods long by 16 rods wide, on the south side of the house lot of George Pack, fronting on the highway ...". Note the spelling of Vincent's name, three (3) years after his marriage it was already being americanized.
No known documents relating to Vincent Rongnion are known to exist before June 28, 1668. What is known about his origins as a French Protestant came from Orra Eugene Monnet in his book First Settlers of Piscataway, New Jersey. As most of us know, Monnet's works must be viewed with caution.
Family stories among various Runyon/Runyan lines have suggested other country origins such as Germany and others have said England. No documentation had been discovered to establish he came from Germany or England. On the other hand, there is no documented proof that Vincent Rongnion came from France. Over the last 50-60 years many have visited France to try to get documentation on Vincent and to document who his father may have been. All have failed in locating the necessary documentation. The latest to try that I know of was Amali Runyon Perkins daughter of Robert Runyon ( Runyon Genealogy, 1955). She had placed the result of her search so far (with the assistance of a professional genealogist) on the "net" at home.satx.rr.com/runyontidbits/runyonfrance.html.
What do you think........ Did Vincent Rongnion really come from France?
