Hello All,
Thanks for contributing to this search for our Runyon/Runyan/Runion ancestors and kinfolk. I'm new to this but have always been interested in our family history.
I'm descended from the line of John III who moved from Brock's Gap, VA to Indiana ca. 1838.
My special interest is Civil War history. We have ancestors who fought on both sides (and no sides) during the war...the National Park Service Soldiers and Sailors System is a great starting point. The website is at:
www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/
Our most famous Civil War relative is one Theodore Runyon. Theodore was born in N.J., attended Yale University, practiced law and commanded a brigade of New Jersey militia at the start of the Civil War. At the First Battle of Bull Run, he commanded the 4th Division (Reserve). His term of service was ninety days. At the end of his term, he returned to N.J., became the city attorney of Newark; got elected mayor; and ran (unsuccessfully) for the governorship. He went back into law, eventually becoming the Chancellor of N.J. (head of the court of appeals). In 1893, President Grover Cleveland appointed Theodore to be our diplomatic representative to Germany. He then became our first U.S. ambassador to Germany and died in Berlin in 1896 and is buried in N.J. Here's a link to a website with an image of him in his brigadier general's uniform:

I've uncovered other stories of relatives who served in the Civil War and have started to compile these for inclusion into either a website, e-book or physical book. I'm especially interested in determining whether any of our relatives fought against one another in the same battles in regiments or units that directly opposed one another...truly "cousin against cousin."
Please, if you have any family stories, records, diaries, letters, photos, etc., related to those who served during the Civil War, I would be very interested in contacting you. Please email me at:

Thanks for your interest.
