Here goes, please be sure to tell me if I have something wrong...
First of all, I know that Julia Runyan married Andrew Hiner 21 MAR 1850, Polk, Iowa, and that according to the marriage certificate for Anna (Hyner/Hiner/Heiner) Embody Palmer her parents were Julia Runyan and Andrew Hiner. While hunting for information (with Merry's help) regarding Andrew J. Hiner's parents (Robert Hiner and Mahala Calvert) I came across a website which listed an obituary for Mary Charlotte (Hiner) Runyan that said she met and married her husband, Henry T. Runyan, in 1865 while she was living with an Uncle in Des Moines, IA. Also included in the article was the fact that her father had died when she was young and she had been rasied by her grandmother. Based on this we (Merry and I) figured out that her father was Jesse Hiner, a brother to Andrew Jackson Hiner and her grandmother was Mahala (Calvert) Hiner. I then found her listed, with her grandmother, on the 1860 IA census in the household of Thomas Jefferson Hiner - also a brother to Andrew, Samuel and Jesse.
Given the fact that my Andrew Jackson Hiner and his wife Julia Runyan were living in Des Moines (1866/67 Des Moines City Directory Hiner Jackson, laborer, 3d bet Vine and Market e s) it is my assumption that Mary Charlotte Hiner was staying with Andrew Hiner and his wife Julia Runyan when she met Henry T. Runyan and that he was related in some manner to Julia Ann Runyan.
It is also my hunch that given the fact that Andrew Hiner was lynched, various family members no longer spoke of him which is why he is not specifically named in the article about Mary C. (Hiner) Runyan. According to PIONEERS OF POLK COUNTY, IOWA PAGE 182:"The work was done by Samuel Hiner a brother of "Jack" Hiner who so mysteriously disappeared in 1869." and per "The Annals of Polk County, Iowa: and the City of Des Moines, Porter, Will. 1898, Chapter 7 called "The Disappearance of Jack Hiner." In addition there is another story (HANGING OF HINER) regarding a "James Hiner" who was hung in Clinton County, IA which mentions the fact that "ole' Hiner" also went by the name of John Stanton.
Now Julia Ann (Runyan) Hiner was consistant in listing her parents birthplaces on census records - Father born VA, Mother born KY and that she was born November of 1836 in OH, which means she married at 12...scary as that may be!
Next I checked into Henry T. Runyan's line via his father, William, and possible grandfather, John Elliot Runnion, as I had NEVER been able to find either Andrew Jackson Hiner or his wife Julia on either the 1850 or 1860 census. And (thank you Connie) on the 1850 census for Dallas County, IA taken the 6th of October 1850 there is:
Soloman Runnion Age 37
Nancy A. Runnion Age 32
Mary Runnion age 12
Amanda Runnion age 2.
John Runnion age 61 born VA
Elizabeth Runnion age 55 born KY
Betsy A. age 15
Franklin Runnion age 34
Mary Runnion age 20
Franklin M Runnion age 1 (Connie's line)
Elijah Runnion age 32
Martha Runnion age 6
Nancy age 4
Hex Cinclair age 9/12
John Hiner age 22 born IN *******
Julian age 16 born IN (Julia Ann???)
Now the William Runyan is said to be father to Henry T. Runyan. He (William Runnion/Runyan) was born on Ohio in 1823, but I did not find the connection between Henry and William on any census. Does anyone have that???
Henry T. Runyan was born in Indiana married Mary C. Hiner in IA. Their children were:
William Runyan
Jonas lanar Runyan
Ida May Runyan
Charles W. Runyan
Jesse Prudence Runyan
Now here is where things get confusing:
I tried to trace Henry T. Runyan's father William and found that William's father is listed as David Runyan. I also found that David Runyan and his second wife Rebecca Sharp did have a daughter named Julia Ann Runyan... which would make sense as Henry T. Hiner could have been visiting his Aunt Julia Ann (Runyan) Hiner when he met Mary C. Hiner, daughter of his Aunt's brother-in-law; Jesse Hiner.
BUT... and these are big a problems...
According to just about everyone on the internet the Julia Ann Runyan, daughter of David Runyan and Rebecca Sharp, was born in May of 1838 in Warren County, Ohio and married twice, once to a Mr. Shoe and second to a Thomas Heath on the 17 September of 1859 in Warren County, OH.
Also, Merry sent me info stating "Anyhow Midge (her name is Marilynn May Runyan) has the book and she told me that Julia May Runyan married a Shoe." NOTE the fact that she says the Julia who married a SHOE had the middle name of MAY rather than ANN. What is up with that? Could there be some confusion regarding the various Julia Runyan's??? I seem to think so.
Ok... now I have to back track again... If the family of John Runyan/Runnion in IA on the 1850 census and they did have a daughter named Julia I need to find out what proof there is regarding the parentage of the Julia Ann Runyan who married Mr. Shoe and Thomas Heath. For example, did she have a bible record listing her parents???
*******And if the John Hiner listed on the 6 October 1850 in Dallas County, IA census is indeed Andrew Jackson Hiner how come there is an Andrew Hiner (age 21) also listed on the August 1850 census for Geneva Township, Jennings County, IN (below Henry Hiner age 23) Ok, so I checked Mapquest and from Vernon (Jennings County) IN to Adel (Dallas County, IA) it is a Total distance: 570.4 miles. Estimated travel time: 588 minutes. - approx a ten house car ride if you are going sixty miles per hour. I cannot imagine what it would have been if you were riding a horse - so I checked askjeeves.com and found out that "This is a very smooth and gliding gate that is the same as the flat walk but a bit faster. Thus the Horse can travel at 10-20 miles per hour." So, if a horse can go 20 miles per hour wouldn't that be 1/3 of the time it takes in a car??? And wouldn't that mean it would take 30 hours to get from Jennings County, IN to Dallas County, IA? (Ok, I STINK at math... so be sure to figure that out again for me!!!!)
Next I went back to William Runyan who married Nancy Jones - the supposed father of Henry T. Runyan. (Where is the proof on that? I cannot find either Henry or William on the 1850 or 1860 census...) Now William was born in Harlan Township, Warren County, OH in 1823 and was buried in Milford, Barton County, MO and married 29 October 1842 in Vermillion County, IND.
I thought he may have lived in IA too, given a considerable number of the Runyan's did, and when I checked the Civil War records I came across:
Name: William T Runyan ,
Residence: Polk City, Iowa
Enlistment Date: 14 December 1861
Distinguished Service: DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
Side Served: Union
State Served: Iowa
Unit Numbers: 182 182 182
Service Record: Enlisted as a Private on 14 December 1861Enlisted in Company A, 10th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 14 December 1861.Reenlisted in Company A, 10th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 01 January 1864Promoted to Full Corporal on 01 October 1864Mustered out Company A, 10th Infantry Regiment Iowa on 15 August 1865 in Little Rock, AR
This regiment was organized at Camp Fremont, near Iowa City, in the summer and fall of 1861. Perhaps this is Henry's father??? Does anyone have these Civil War records?
Ok... I guess I really need to find Julia and Andrew Hiner on the 1860 census, as there are doubts about the 1850 census.
Sigh… so what do you think??? Where do I go from here?
