:-help: Have hit a brick wall with my great grandfather Elijah Runion. He married Mary Catherine Moore in Roane County WV. He died in 1944 and his mother is listed as Rachael Runion. I can find no birth certificate for him nor can I trace his mother and father. They had three children, Effie, Lydia, and Mathew, all living in the Roane County and Kanawha Counties of WV. Any help or clue would be greatly appreciated.

I think you must be refering to this family line..........

Notes for ELIJAH RUNYON: Robert and Amos Runyon in their book "Runyon Genealogy" printed 1955 used the spelling "RUNYON" for Elijah's surname. In 1962, Robert Runyon printed "Supplement to Runyon Genealogy" and therein he indicated that Elijah used the spelling of "RUNION" in his application for a pension from Jackson County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Some have said that later generations used the spelling of "RUNNION" as their surname.
Page 131 of "Runyon Genealogy" by Robert & Amos Runyon printed 1955 says;
"Elijah Runyon was most likely married in Monongalia County circa 1772. He is also listed in the 1785 tax list of Harrison County and was included in the 1790 census with his wife and two children. ...
Elijah and his wife were born before 1775, either in New Jersey or Augusta County. The 1810 U.S. Census of Harrison County lists Elijah and wife as being more than forty-five years of age. They had three sons between 10 and 16 years, and one daughter more than 16 years of age. ..."

Thank you Ira for the information. I have come across this before and it does not seem to be my line on Runions. Elijah was born in Roane County WV between 1858 and 1859. I cannot find documents to support this other than his death certificate. His death certificate lists Rachel Runion as his mother and his father is unknown. I cannot find any documentation for Rachel either. Elijah's wife, Mary Catherine Moore, supposedly shot herself in Roane County, again no documents to support this. Thought I might get lucky and someone on this board would be relatives. Again, thanks.

Juanita, I'm sorry I posted the unrelated information, I did not pay close enouth attention to your posting. (I did not realise it was you posting).
I have no information at all on your line, and a quick check on the internet provided no information that you don't already have.
Your Elijah Runion (Runnion) seems to have lived an undocumented life. I know you have been searching for a long time, and hopefully in the near future you will find that one link which will allow the rest of the family information to fall in place.

I found on Ancestry :
Elijah Runyon Birth: 15 Sep 1868 - West Virginia, USA Death: 3 May 1944
married to
Ida Mae Schoolcraft (alt name Mary Catherine Moore) 24 Aug 1881 Roane, , West Virginia, USA
Children: William Matthew Runyon Lydia Jane Runyon Effie Mae Runyon
They have few sources of census records and the 1930 Census has Elijah. It is spelled Elijah in the original document but what was transcribed was Eliza.
